He is best known for playing organized crime boss Arnold Rothstein in the HBO television series ''Boardwalk Empire'' (2010–2013), troubled university professor Larry Gopnik in the 2009 dark comedy film ''A Serious Man'', Griffin in ''Men in Black 3'' (2012), and Dr. Flicker in ''Blue Jasmine'' (2013).
